Auburn University’s Center for Educational Outreach and Engagement partners with the College of Education for our Rural Teacher Fellows (RTF) program The Rural Teacher Fellows program, established in 2024, places students completing their student-teacher residency to live and teach in rural Alabama. Fellows receive a $3000 stipend, housing at no cost, and participate in a course, Teaching in Rural Places, that incorporates community learning experiences for students using deliberative discussion and reflection as well as a civic engagement project. The first cohort of RTF lived in Children’s Harbor and completed student-teaching at Eclectic Elementary School. To further the connection among college students, RTF aims to pilot an expansion near Rural Health Initiative sites in West Alabama to increase connection, partnership, and collaboration among Auburn University initiatives.
