For five years, YPIT has helped East Alabama students explore careers, build confidence and graduate college-ready, while empowering parents and Auburn student mentors. With themes like entrepreneurship and health care, hands-on experiences and community support, YPIT creates a family of learners and leaders.

When a young Sam Gaston came to Auburn in the mid-seventies to pursue a degree in Public Administration, he couldn’t fully envision his career path, but he knew one thing, he wanted to work in public service. In November of 2025, Gaston was celebrated after completing 45 years of doing just that. Gaston has worked with The Government & Economic Development Institute for decades, educating others in the field of government and community service by sharing his knowledge and expertise.

Auburn University’s Portia Johnson, assistant professor and Extension specialist in the College of Human Sciences, created the Alabama FAFSA Application Survival Toolkit (FAST) to help high school students meet the state’s FAFSA graduation requirement. Since its launch, FAST has supported more than 10,000 students and parents across 90 schools, earning Johnson the 2025 Royrickers Cook Endowed Engagement Award and the College of Human Sciences’ Faculty Excellence in Outreach award. Building on her expertise in financial management, Johnson has expanded FAST into career readiness and developed programs on personal finance, fraud prevention, and disaster-proofing finances, partnering with Extension agents and local organizations to deliver practical resources that empower Alabama communities.

Kiesel Park was filled with energy and purpose on October 4 as more than 180 participants came together for a charity marathon organized by the Korea Corner Youth Leadership Program. The event featured a one-mile walk and a 5K run, drawing students and local residents to support the Big House Foundation, a foster care organization serving the Auburn area.
Led by youth volunteers, the event emphasized community engagement and generosity. Participants, sponsors, and organizers united under the motto “Small actions create a big impact,” raising funds and awareness for a meaningful cause.
