Auburn Youth Programs: Energizing Auburn’s Summer and Economy

When Auburn University students leave campus for summer break, the city doesn’t slow down—it comes alive. Auburn Youth Programs (AYP) transforms the university and surrounding community into a vibrant hub of learning, leadership and economic activity. Over eight weeks, more than 4,000 campers from across the country and beyond experience life as future Auburn students, participating in academic and athletic camps that showcase the best of Auburn’s faculty, facilities and spirit.

In partnership with Varsity Spirit, AYP hosts 156 cheer and dance teams from 113 schools across 52 counties and four states. These camps, designated Tier 1 by Varsity Spirit, reflect Auburn’s reputation for excellence and efficiency in hosting large-scale youth programs.

Beyond the cheer and dance camps, AYP’s full slate of summer programming contributes significantly to the local economy. Campers and their families support local businesses by dining downtown, shopping for dorm essentials, and booking hotel stays. Many parents explore Auburn while their children attend camp, creating lasting impressions and meaningful connections to the city. Collectively, AYP camps generate over $212,000 in economic impact and account for more than 500 hotel room bookings each summer.

“Auburn Youth Programs bring a special energy to the Auburn economy,” said Robyn Bridges, President & CEO of Auburn-Opelika Tourism. “These visitors impact our economy now and will for many years to come.”

From boosting local businesses to cultivating future Auburn students, AYP exemplifies the power of outreach. It’s more than summer camp—it’s a strategic investment in Auburn’s future, community, and legacy.
