Johnson receives esteemed Outreach service award
In Fall 2025, Auburn Outreach honored Portia Johnson, financial resource management extension specialist in the College of Human Sciences, with the Royrickers Cook Engagement Award. This distinction celebrates faculty whose outreach exemplifies Auburn’s land-grant mission to improve lives through education and community impact. Johnson’s leadership in financial education and community engagement reflects that mission fully.
From the beginning of her academic career, Johnson has been driven by a personal and professional commitment to empower families through knowledge. A first-generation college graduate, Johnson understands the challenges families face in navigating financial aid and accessing higher education. Drawing on her expertise in consumer behavior and analytics, she has developed research-based solutions that help individuals make informed financial decisions. Her signature initiative, Alabama FAST (FAFSA Application Survival Toolkit), launched in 2022, provides families with tools to understand college financing, including a student guide, educator materials, and a curriculum available through ACES. Johnson also trained Extension professionals to deliver workshops statewide. Since its inception, Alabama FAST has reached more than 10,000 students and families, helping Alabama climb from 34th to 9th nationally in FAFSA completion.
Johnson expanded her impact with Better FAFSA training for 135 educators and is developing ALFAST Career Explorer, a curriculum linking students to high-demand careers. Her work has earned multiple state, regional, and national awards, including recognition from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
