VP Message Beyond Auburn Spring-Summer 2026

Dr. Royrickers CookThe value of service to others

The value of service to others is deeply engrained in the core tenets of Auburn University. From our Auburn Creed’s call for “the human touch” in uplifting our fellow citizens, to our institutional strategic plan’s objectives to provide “catalytic engagement” to improve quality of life for all, we uphold this historical commitment. The Carnegie Foundation’s recent renewal of the university’s community engagement classification is further affirmation of Auburn’s devotion to working for the greater good.

Robust faculty engagement contributes to Auburn’s impactful outreach and extension responses to a wide range of community needs. This can be clearly seen in the projects supported through our annual Competitive Outreach Scholarship Grants. First offered by University Outreach in 1998, and supported by Outreach program revenues, these intramural grants encourage and support faculty engaged scholarship, university/community collaboration and address critical societal needs. Included in this issue are updates from some of the most recent grant recipients.

This issue also profiles the success of some of Auburn’s most impactful outreach initiatives. These include Outreach Global’s Korea Corner educational and cultural resource center, and the Auburn Youth Program’s High School Leadership Conference. This year we are celebrating the award-winning Campus Kitchen now entering its 16th year of addressing hunger in our region, and our Government and Economic Development Institute which has for fifty amazing years been a key resource to Alabama’s state and local communities.

Engaged faculty scholarship, cornerstone outreach services and active community collaborations have earned Auburn the national recognition of the Carnegie community engagement classification. More importantly, our work is effective and impactful in making a positive difference for all those we serve.

Join me in making that difference!

War Eagle and best regards,

Royrickers Cook, Ph.D.
