Family Day with SOUND is engaging the community

SOUND (Supporting Outreach and Understanding Neurodiverse Differences) is an Auburn University College of Nursing initiative dedicated to empowering families as they navigate sensory and emotional regulation challenges. Sensory processing is the brain’s interpretation of our senses to determine the physical and emotional change required for response. Some people may experience challenges related to appropriate sensory processing, often seen in certain populations living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Additionally, SOUND provides sensory resources at community events through tools such as the Sensory Activation Vehicle (a mobile sensory room), weighted vests and noise-muffling headphones. These resources are providing families, schools and youth-serving organizations with practical, impactful tools to support individuals experiencing sensory sensitivities. In collaboration with faculty, students from the College of Nursing and the College of Human Sciences’ Child Life Program participate in these initiatives, gaining valuable experiences that enhance their awareness, knowledge and attitudes toward sensory processing challenges while strengthening their ability to support diverse populations.

On January 17, 2026, SOUND launched an exciting new tradition: its inaugural Family Day with SOUND. Parents participated in presentations, group discussions, an expert panel and networking. Meanwhile, children enjoyed supervised activities, including sensory play stations, learning about hospital environments and meeting Auburn’s emergency medical service professionals and firefighters—complete with tours of their vehicles.

Family Day participants had an opportunity to hang out with Sully and experience his calming, therapeutic effects.

Family Day with SOUND offered valuable feedback from families and fostered connections among parents who share the joys and challenges of raising children with unique needs. This success was made possible by the enthusiasm of attending families, the dedication of students and faculty and the expertise of guest presenters.

One faculty commented, “Our parents were so engaged, and it was clear that this was a great opportunity to meet other families that were experiencing similar things.” Another mentioned, “the children all had very different needs, but it was incredible to see faculty and staff come together so that their caregivers could have time for themselves.”

Looking ahead, SOUND is excited to grow Family Day, inviting more families and community partners to join in creating inclusive, supportive spaces in Auburn and beyond.
