Outreach Global’s Korea Corner continues to expand Korean language and culture education across five local schools, currently serving 155 students. Supported by the Atlanta Korean Education Center, the program operates at Drake Middle School, E. Samford School, Auburn Junior High School, Opelika High School and LaGrange Academy. At Opelika High School, Korean is offered as a world language course within the regular academic curriculum.
Students learn Hangul reading and writing, foundational conversational skills and essential vocabulary while engaging in hands-on cultural experiences that deepen their understanding of Korean traditions and contemporary culture.
On Feb. 17, participating schools celebrated Seollal, the Korean Lunar New Year, through special cultural activities. Students sampled traditional foods such as japchae, practiced using chopsticks and participated in games including yutnori, tuho, gonggi, ddakji and omok. At Drake Middle School, students learned about Seollal customs, tried on hanbok and practiced performing sebae, the traditional New Year’s bow.
LaGrange Academy hosted a schoolwide Seollal celebration where students dressed in hanbok, performed sebae for the principal and participated in traditional games and K‑pop karaoke activities.
These celebrations provided meaningful opportunities for students to engage with global traditions and foster cross-cultural understanding.
